Our History

Did you know this land has been in the same family for over 100 years? The very nature trails you hike today once held working moonshine stills operated by our great-grandfather. Years later, the vision shifted from stills to serenity, and in 1971, construction began on the dam and campground. By July 4th, 1973, Diamond Lure Campground officially opened to the public. Today, it's proudly run by Shawn Hefner, the 4th generation of the family to care for this special place.

The property's isolation meant it was easy to distill illegal liquor without the knowledge of the authorities. Moonshine occupies a special place in the history of North Georgia. Festivals that celebrate the moonshine heritage of Georgia remain popular.

Meet The Owners

After 28 years in public safety, Shawn—along with his wife Eschell, who is also retired from public safety—took the reins at Diamond Lure in 2016. Since then, they’ve been dedicated to making every guest’s stay as comfortable and memorable as possible. You’ve probably seen them at check-in or buzzing around the campground, making sure everything is just right for your visit. Be sure to give them a big wave and a smile—they, along with the rest of the Diamond Lure team, are working hard to make your camping adventure the best it can be!
